Gail
Buckner secures "WIN-ing" endorsement
Secretary of State candidate receives key endorsement from
Georgia's WIN List
ATLANTA
- This week, Georgia's WIN List announced its endorsement of state
Rep. Gail Buckner (D-Jonesboro) in the race for Georgia Secretary
of State. According to WIN Chairperson, Mary Long, "Gail Buckner's
16 years of legislative experience and strong record of service
to the citizens of Georgia make her the kind of candidate Georgia's
WIN List is proud to support."
Georgia's
WIN (Women In Numbers) List is a political action committee that
provides financial, strategic, and political support to Democratic
women who are committed to reproductive freedom in addition to economic,
educational and legal equality for all women.
Contributors
to Georgia's WIN List receive profiles of endorsed candidates for
the General Assembly and statewide office and write personal checks
to those candidates whom they choose to support. Buckner is one
out of three women vying for the Secretary of State post. WIN criterion
for endorsees include professional excellence and experience, charisma,
influence, integrity, work ethic, and a superior level of commitment.
In addition to creating the offense of Child Endangerment by DUI,
Buckner crafted legislation that prohibits drive-by mastectomies.
Buckner also passed a measure that created a voluntary check-off
box on state tax returns, enabling citizens to donate to research,
prevention, and treatment of breast, prostate and ovarian cancer.
So far, Buckner's initiative has generated over $1 million dollars.
Now in her eighth term, Buckner is the only member of the General
Assembly to have been named twice as the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition'
Legislator of the Year. Buckner has also been recognized by the
Cobb Democratic Women, Georgia Congress of Democratic Women, Georgia
Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, NAACP, Boys and Girls
Club of America, and the University of Georgia College of Family
and Consumer Science.
To put herself through college, Buckner worked for the YMCA and
was named Director of Women and Girls Programs before her graduation.
Prior to her legislative career, she managed a national retail store
and also worked as a classroom teacher.
Buckner
also co-founded Rainbow House, an emergency shelter for children,
and Prevention Plus, a non-profit organization that reaches out
to at-risk youth. In addition, Buckner has been the long-time Director
of the Children's Choir at First Baptist Church of Jonesboro where
she is an active member.
Buckner is the most experienced state official and the most successful
campaigner in the Democratic Primary for Georgia Secretary of State.

Gail
Buckner's 16 years of legislative experience and strong record of
service to the citizens of Georgia make her the kind of candidate
Georgia's WIN List is proud to support. Buckner's past election
experience and well-planned campaign, her ability to articulate
the issues, and the content of her platform in addition to her motivation
to help other women meet the criteria for WIN's endorsement many
times over. Her ideas regarding a Candidates' Code of Conduct and
an independent commission to oversee redistricting will appeal to
voters.
